My heart is especially full + tender today.
For many of us, Mother's Day is . . . complicated. Although I adore my own sweet mama and we are very close, this is also our first Mother's Day without my mother-in-law. Words rest heavy on my tongue and heart today. Nothing feels quite right to say.
So many in our phoenix community, too, ache on this day. Mothers who have lost. Mother-hearts who yearn for babies of their own. Daughters and sons who have lost, or who never felt the mother-love they needed.
This is a complicated day.
When words fail,
may you still feel loved.
On this day, however you feel . . .
may your mother-heart
be full + loved;
may you feel seen,
heard, appreciated
--in all your complex layers.
May your child-heart
be full + loved;
may you feel seen,
heard, appreciated
--in all your complex layers.
To my mama, Maureen . . .
I love you more than words. What a gift to be your daughter and your friend . . . and your editor! (Maureen is our beloved Bitter & Beautiful columnist, and eagle-eye proofreader.)
You are sweet, vibrant, tenderhearted, and tenacious.
To my mother-in-law, Carole . . .
We miss you every day.
You taught me a steely strength that survives all, wrapped in a wicked sense of humor. You are always with us.
We love you "to the moon and back."
